The Call of the Wild

This is an okay book written by Jack London. In 1897, Buck, a daring shepherd dog, is kidnapped and shipped to the Klondike gold fields in Canada to be a sled dog. There he must adapt to severe cold, poor treatment, less food, and ferocious dogs or else die. As soon as he becomes attached to his human masters he is sold again. Gradually, Buck returns to his natural wild temperament and gains a reputation for his strength and ability to lead a pack.

The book was published in 1903 and London wrote a similar book in 1906 called White Fang. The Yeehat Alaska Natives are fictional. There have been several film adapations: a 1935 version with Clark Gable, a 1972 version with Charlton Heston, and a 1997 film narrated by Richard Dreyfuss. In the late 19th century, gold was discovered along the Klondike River near Dawson City, Yukon Territory; about 12.5 million ounces of gold has been recovered over the past century.
