9 Dragons

This is an okay book written by Michael Connelly. Fortune Liquors is a small shop in a tough South L.A. neighborhood, a store Detective Harry Bosch has known for years. Bosch still carries in his pocket a matchbook he picked up there on a case years ago. The murder of John Li, the store's owner, hits Harry hard, and he promises Li's family that he'll find the killer. The one good thing in Bosch's life, the daughter he holds most dear, is kidnapped, and Harry travels to Hong Kong in an all-or-nothing bid to rescue her and discover the connection to the store shooting.

This is the 14th novel in the Harry Bosch series.

Cross Fire

This is an okay book written by James Patterson. Detective Alex Cross and Bree's wedding plans are put on hold when Alex is called to the scene of the perfectly executed assassination of two of Washington D.C.'s most corrupt: a dirty congressman and an underhanded lobbyist. Next, the elusive gunman begins picking off other crooked insiders, sparking a blaze of theories. The case explodes, and the FBI assigns Agent Max Siegel to the investigation. As Alex and Siegel battle over jurisdiction, the murders continue. It becomes clear that the killings are the work of a professional who has detailed knowledge of his victims' movements – information that only a Washington insider could possess.

This is the seventeenth book in the Alex Cross series.

The Evolution of Calpurnia Tate

This is an okay book written by Jacqueline Kelly. The summer of 1899 is hot in Calpurnia's sleepy Texas town, and there aren't a lot of good ways to stay cool. Her mother has a new wind machine from town, but Callie might just have to resort to stealthily cutting off her hair, one sneaky inch at a time. She also spends a lot of time at the river with her notoriously cantankerous grandfather, an avid naturalist. It turns out that every drop of river water is teeming with life – all you have to do is look through the microscope! As Callie explores the natural world around her, she develops a close relationship with her grandfather, navigates the dangers of living with six brothers, and learns just what it means to be a girl at the turn of the century.

Moonlight Mile

This is an okay book written by Dennis Lehane. Amanda McCready was four years old when she vanished from a Boston neighborhood twelve years ago. Desperate pleas for help from the child's aunt led investigators Kenzie and Gennaro to take on the case. The pair risked everything to find the young girl – only to orchestrate her return to a neglectful mother and a broken home. Now Amanda is sixteen – and gone again. A stellar student, brilliant but aloof, she seemed destined to escape her upbringing. Yet Amanda's aunt is once more knocking on Patrick Kenzie's door, fearing the worst for the little girl who has blossomed into a striking, clever young woman – a woman who hasn't been seen in weeks.

This is the sixth novel in the Kenzie-Gennaro series and is also the sequel to Gone, Baby, Gone.

61 Hours

This is an okay book written by Lee Child. When she discovers that a vicious assassin has his sights set on her, a woman preparing to testify against sinister forces in Bolton, South Dakota, calls on the help of Jack Reacher, a former United States Army Military Police Major, whose tour bus recently crashed near the woman's town. Over the course of the next 61 hours, both their lives change dramatically.

This is the fourteenth book in the Jack Reacher series. A brief description of how he survives the conflagration appears in the next Reacher novel, Worth Dying For.

The Alchemyst

This is an okay book written by Michael Scott. The truth: Nicholas Flamel was born in Paris on September 28, 1330. Nearly seven hundred years later, he is acknowledged as the greatest Alchemyst of his day. It is said that he discovered the secret of eternal life. The records show that he died in 1418. But his tomb is empty. The legend: Nicholas Flamel lives. But only because he has been making the elixir of life for centuries. The secret of eternal life is hidden within the book he protects – the Book of Abraham the Mage. It's the most powerful book that has ever existed. In the wrong hands, it will destroy the world.

This is the first novel in the series. The author changed the name of The Book of Abramelin. That book was likely written around 1458 and is about an Egyptian mage. John Dee (1527-1608) is also a real person. Victor Hugo mentioned Flamel in The Hunchback of Notre Dame. Flamel is also alluded to in J. K. Rowling's first Harry Potter book.

The Hunt for Dark Infinity

This is an okay book written by James Dashner. Tick, Paul, and Sofia receive a disturbing letter from Master George. He reveals that Mr. Chu from the Fourth Reality has created a diabolical weapon that is making people from all dimensions go insane. However, before the gang can properly investigate, Tick and his friends are kidnapped and forced to solve a series of challenging and dangerous riddles.

This is the second book of The 13th Reality.

Hell's Corner

I liked this book written by David Baldacci. Oliver Stone – once the most skilled assassin in the country – stands in Lafayette Park near the White House, perhaps for the last time. The President has personally requested that Stone serve the country again on a high-risk, covert mission. Then Stone's mission changes drastically before it even begins. It's the night of a state dinner honoring the British prime minister. As he watches the motorcade leave that evening, a bomb is detonated in the park, an apparent terrorist attack against both world leaders. It's in the chaotic aftermath that Stone takes on a new, more urgent assignment: find those responsible for the attack.

This is the fifth book in the Camel Club series.

Leven Thumps and the Ruins of Alder

I loved this book written by Obert Skye. All of Foo is rushing madly to exit the realm of dreams while Leven is headed in the opposite direction. Fate snatches him to the island of Alder, where, with the faithful sycophant Clover at his side, he is poised to pass or fail the final test. Meanwhile, in reality, Ezra and Dennis are welcoming those flowing out of Foo – but only so they can selfishly conquer them and gain control of both domains. Ezra is watching particularly for Geth, ready to reap the revenge he has dreamed of since the beginning.

This is a great finish to an enjoyable series. I already have the fourth book and will have to purchase the others. Skye definitely has a unique way of writing and I like the chapter beginnings that have some connection to real life scenarios. But his reason for the title of the series seemed really weak.

Stoneheart

This is an okay book written by Charlie Fletcher. While on a school field trip, outcast George Chapman accidentally awakes an ancient evil. Now, the statues of London have come to life, including a Pterodactyl that chases the terrified twelve-year-old. However, not all of the statues are evil, as George is aided by a WWI gunner. Together, they must face the evil that plagues London and return the world to the way it was.

This is the first book in the trilogy.

Port Mortuary

This is an okay book written by Patricia Cornwell. At the beginning of her professional career, when she accepted a scholarship from the Air Force, Scarpetta found herself ensnared in a gruesome case of hate crimes against two Americans in South Africa. More than two years later, Scarpetta is confronted with a case when a young man drops dead, but an examination of his body indicates he may have been alive when he was zipped inside a pouch and locked in the Cambridge Forensic Center's cooler room.

This is the eighteenth book in the series.

Pictures of Hollis Woods

This is an okay book written by Patricia Reilly Giff. Hollis is a 12-year-old girl who's been in so many foster homes she can hardly remember them all. When Hollis is sent to Josie, an elderly artist who is quirky and affectionate, she wants to stay. But Josie is growing more forgetful every day. If Social Services finds out, they'll take Hollis away and move Josie into a home. Well, Hollis won't let anyone separate them. She's escaped the system before; this time, she's taking Josie with her.

CBS released a television film based on the book in 2007 and starring Sissy Spacek.

Farmer Boy

This is an okay book written by Laura Ingalls Wilder. While Laura grows up on the western prairie, a boy named Almanzo Wilder is living on a farm in New York State. Almanzo and his brother and sisters work at their chores from dawn until supper most days – no matter what the weather. There is still time for fun, though, especially with his horses, which Almanzo loves more than anything.

This is the second book written for the Little House series, but is often considered the third book. Almanzo Wilder was almost ten years older than Laura Ingalls. He also had a sister named Laura.

Painted Ladies

This is an okay book written by Robert B. Parker. Spenser is hired by the Hammond Museum to protect Dr. Ashton Prince as he attempts to exchange money in return for a recently stolen painting. However, when the exchange goes awry, Spenser sets out to personally find the stolen painting and bring the thieves to justice.

Tough Customer

This is an okay book written by Sandra Brown. Colleagues, friends, and lovers know Dodge Hanley as a private investigator who doesn't let rules get in his way – in his private life as well as his professional one. That's why he's the first person Caroline King – who after a 30-year separation continues to haunt his dreams – asks for help when a deranged stalker attempts to murder their daughter...the daughter Dodge has never met.
